Roll First Lines.

The book reads two dice left to right, so a 3 then a 5 is entry 35. Here one entry in each band is open. Roll for a band and the book opens there. The other 30 stay locked, and so does every other table in the book.

Tap the dice, or any entry.

Roll, and you get the line exactly as the book prints it.

d66 Writing Prompts, First Lines to Last

"The tide went out and kept going." That's entry 44 on the First Lines table, and the idea is that someone picks it up and carries on from there, whether that's a writer staring at a blank page or a GM who needs a cold open in about a minute.

The book has 108 prompts across three tables. First Lines are openings, ready to continue. Strange Inheritances are the object, duty or creature somebody has just been handed, and one of them makes a decent character hook in a single line. Last Lines give the story somewhere to land. A few of them answer particular first lines, and we left it to you to find which.

At a game table they turn into dreams, prophecies, a bard's set, or a letter someone finds in a coat pocket. Read a last line aloud at the start of a campaign and the party has something to chase for months. You won't need a system or any of the other volumes to use it.

WHAT'S INSIDE

  • 3 d66 tables: First Lines, Strange Inheritances, Last Lines. 108 entries, each one meant to be continued.
  • Grouped in sixes, so a single die works when a nudge is all you're after.
  • Screen edition plus a plain-white print edition, US Letter.
  • Every table as plain text for VTT decks and writing tools.
  • Bookmarked, DRM-free PDF. Copy from it and mark it up.
  • System-agnostic with no rules text, for writers and game tables alike.

What ends up in the party's pack afterward is covered in Vol. IV, Trinkets & Hoards.
