Sorcerer Subclass for 5e
The longer a fight runs, the more this sorcerer has to spend. Dawnward Sorcery collects Hours for as long as combat lasts, and Hours pay for Metamagic, so the late rounds are yours right around the time everyone else at the table is running dry.
That turns each turn into a small decision about whether to spend now or bank for later. Features arrive at levels 3, 6, 14, and 18, and the capstone is kept for the worst night of the campaign, which it answers with a dawn.
